Lasqueti Island, British Columbia

The island is 18km long and 12km wide, or 12km long and 18km wide, depending on which way up you hold the map. It’s known to islanders as “the rock”. The main event of the day seems to be the arrival of the ferry. There are three crossings a day from Thursday to Monday – …

I’m on an island off the coast of Vancouver Island (referred to here as “the other side”). Vancouver Island is off the West coast of Canada. Last night went to a fancy dress Halloween party here, the major annual event on the island. People dress so as not to be recognized by other islanders, but …

Vancouver, British Columbia

I’ve walked around a bit of the city now. The grid system makes it quite easy to find your way around. There seems to be more of a cafe culture rather than a pub culture here. And it’s quite warm. People are still sitting outside, usually the smokers since it’s not allowed inside.

I went to Stanley Park today, just half an hour’s walk from downtown, and had a look at the Pacific Ocean. Back at the hostel now I’ve been searching for maps on the internet showing where I’ve been. Here’s one which shows my route through the Okanagan Valley about a week ago (click on the …

Kelowna, British Columbia

This is Rogers Pass, the toughest bit of the Rockies. It wasn’t that steep, but the hill was very long. I kept thinking I’d got to the top. There’d be a small downhill section and I’d think I’ve done it, I’ve got through Rogers Pass… but then it would start going up again.

I’m over the Rockies and into British Columbia where it’s been raining pretty consistently, except for yesterday when it wasn’t. The video camera got wet a couple of days ago and made the colours run into each other like wet paint, but it seems to have recovered now.

Lake Louise, Alberta

A holiday from cycling today (again). I took a walk from the village of Lake Louise up to the lake itself. When I set off there was a light drizzle which had become a slushy snow as I got up to the lake. At the lake is a huge hotel, the Lake Louise Chateau. It …

I cycled 60km up from Banff today, along the Bow Valley Parkway, Highway 1A, which runs parallel to the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) but is a really quiet road – about one car every five minutes. It was quite easy going – not very hilly and I was sheltered from the wind.

Sitting in the hostel here going through the video I’ve shot. I’ve just grabbed some stills from the last finished tape (tape number 40) which you can see at the video stills website, but just in case you can’t be bothered to click on that link here’s one of me sitting outside a gas station …
