Sitting inside the warm library but outside it’s snowing. I’ve been trying to arrange a boat across the Pacific to China or India but it doesn’t look like this will be possible. I’d have to have a medical here, which would be expensive, and I’d also have to have proof of onward travel, like a flight ticket or a train ticket taking me out of whatever country I arrive in, which would probably be China, and all this makes it too complicated and too much to pay up front so unfortunately I think I’ll have to fly.

  1. That’s a bummer, flying’s about the worst thing you can do to the environment, apart from be CEO of a neo-feudal corporation. Good to hear you’re still alive and kicking.

  2. Dear Paul,
It’s difficult to know what to write in the face of something this impressive. There is a no-nonsense, economy of expression and a terseness of tone to your writing which makes it reminiscent of the few examples of expeditory(?)accounts I have read (Scot of Antarctic feel). I love the description of your cravings and the sense of otherwordliness (Wickerman etc.) and details like the snow outside the window…
To be going to China! I love the website too.
    Thanks for your card, Dan

  3. hi dan
you’re on the internet! good to hear from you. thanks for the comments. probably not going to china now, but looking into flights to bangkok and then from there to india. i’d rather not fly, but money is very tight and the boat costs too much for me, so i’ll end up with a huge carbon footprint.
hope you’re well – can’t remember you email address so email me paul AT
